Despite the fact that it has been over forty years since the Equal Pay Law was enacted women are still discriminated against in the workplace. Whether it is recruitment or progression in their jobs, women are not paid as well as their male counterparts and nor do they enjoy similar growth opportunities. Trade unions such as GMB have asked the government to recognise the fact that women are not a minority in the working population of the country. In fact, women workers account for 49.4% of paid workers of the 24.2 million strong UK working population. In Wales, women account for 51% of the workers, 51.4% in Northern Ireland and 50% in Scotland.
